Space Program Veterans to Speak at Moon Conference, Past Apollo Director and Former NASA Executive to Use Past Success to Create Future Solutions

Dr. George E. Mueller
Dr. George E. Mueller is known as 'The Man Who Put Men on the Moon'.
Los Angeles, CA, May 3, 2004 – A former executive of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Director of the NASA Apollo Program will speak at the Space Frontier Foundation's upcoming "Return to the Moon V" (RTMV) conference and workshop, the Foundation announced today. The nonprofit space policy organization is sponsoring the conference July 16-18, 2004, at the Westin Casuarina Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dr. George E. Mueller
Dr. Mueller is known as "The Man Who Put Men on the Moon." From 1963 through 1969, Dr. Mueller was NASA's Associate Administrator for Manned Space Flight. As such, he was responsible for the Gemini, Saturn, and Apollo programs, which culminated in the first human beings landing on the Moon. In this role, Kennedy, Johnson and Marshall Space Flight Centers reported to him. He was the originator of Skylab, the world's first space station, and is acknowledged to be the "Father of the Space Shuttle." He is the author of "An Integrated Program of Space Utilization and Exploration," which has been the guiding document for NASA following the Apollo program. Since 1995, Dr. Mueller has been a Director of Kistler Aerospace Corporation, where he currently serves as Chief Executive Officer.

"Dr. Mueller got us to the Moon the first time. I'm sure he has a few ideas on how to get us back," noted Rick Tumlinson, RTMV Co-Chairman (with Andrew Chaikin) and a Foundation Founder. "As a keynote speaker, Dr. Mueller brings a depth of experience that few others have and we are very much looking forward to hearing his evaluation of America's new space initiative and how we will return to the Moon and go beyond to Mars."

Courtney Stadd
Mr. Stadd was Acting NASA Administrator during the transition to current Administrator Sean O'Keefe, and led President George W. Bush's NASA transition team. Prior to joining Bigelow Aerospace in 2004 as a consultant, Stadd was NASA's Chief of Staff and White House Liaison. He worked with two NASA administrators in helping to cast the strategic direction of the agency. In the words of NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe, "Courtney…knows how to motivate people and get things done. He knows the aerospace industry, he knows NASA, and he knows how to articulate and carry forward the agency's goals and objectives." Stadd received NASA's Distinguished Service Medal in 2001 for his "extraordinary vision, leadership and dedication to advancing technology into industry."

Says RTMV Manager Manny Pimenta, "Courtney has been involved in commercial space transportation and research and has co-founded several satellite and space transportation organizations. His contribution will be a real highlight of this conference, as we lay the groundwork for a return to the Moon. We're lucky to have him."

Co-Chairing the conference with Tumlinson will be Andrew Chaikin, noted author of A Man on the Moon: The Triumphant Story of the Apollo Space Program.

The Frontier Enabling Test
Our definition of a "frontier enabling" technology or policy is one which has as its effect the acceleration of the creation of low cost access to the space frontier for private citizens and companies, enables or accelerates our use of space resources, and/or accelerates the rate at which wealth can be generated in space. In other words, is the project or policy going to provide a return on the national investment, if we define "return" to be the economically sustainable human habitation of space?
