The Museum of Flying to Host World Space Party

Yuri Gagarin and Charles Lindbergh
Yuri Gagarin and Charles Lindbergh, two flying legends who spoke out for international collaboration and preservation of the environment.
Los Angeles, CA, March 15, 2002 – The Museum of Flying in Santa Monica, California will host the World Space Party on April 12, 2002. Sponsored in part by the Foundation, the party is the flagship Los Angeles event for Yuri's Night, a celebration of Yuri Gagarin's historic flight.

As this movement has grown, so has the need for a larger venue. Last year's event was sold out at 1500 party goers. The Museum of Flying will allow Yuri's Night to increase that number to over 2500.

Around the world thousands more are expected to participate in Yuri's Night events in 100 cities in nearly 50 countries as well as through a global web cast.

The young Gagarin, who made his historic flight at age 27, was following in the footsteps of many other young aerospace pioneers, including Charles Lindbergh. Both of these men were forever imprinted by their experiences in flight. After making their respective marks in the annals of history, both Gagarin and Lindbergh spoke out in favor of international collaboration and the environment.

Leif Lindbergh, grandson of Charles Lindbergh and an active aerospace enthusiast, notes that both men developed a vision of a world in which ecology and technology are balanced. “I believe that Yuri and Charles are inside each one of us. As we celebrate space, a healthy environment and international peace, we will essentially be working with them and building on their vision,” says Leif. “If they could be here this April 12th, they would definitely endorse this kind of global celebration.” Certainly both would share an image of the world, as Gagarin once envisioned shortly after his flight, in which people “work together to preserve this world, and not destroy it.”

Leif believes that his grandfather would have enjoyed the unifying quality of Yuri's Night. "The two men would connect in a way that transcends cultural and political barriers.” Today the Lindbergh Foundation is instrumental in promoting broader understanding and international cooperation in order to preserve the environment.

Los Angeles party goers will have the chance to join the world in feeling this spirit. Music will be provided by top DJs and many of the parties around the world will be broadcast on the Internet and at the Museum of Flight.

Yuri's Night is a non-profit organization founded with the support of the Space Frontier Foundation and sponsored by individuals, major corporations, and charitable foundations. All Yuri's Night events are organized and managed by an international grassroots network of volunteers.

The Frontier Enabling Test
Our definition of a "frontier enabling" technology or policy is one which has as its effect the acceleration of the creation of low cost access to the space frontier for private citizens and companies, enables or accelerates our use of space resources, and/or accelerates the rate at which wealth can be generated in space. In other words, is the project or policy going to provide a return on the national investment, if we define "return" to be the economically sustainable human habitation of space?
