Foundation Announces Space Business Competition

Los Angeles, CA, August 29, 2000 – Space entrepreneurs will compete for a chance to have their business plans evaluated – and possibly funded – at the Space Frontier Foundation's Annual Conference, to be held October 19-22 at the Manhattan Beach Marriott.

Michael Heney, Chairman of the Board for the Space Frontier Foundation, is excited about this opportunity. "The Foundation has been working diligently to bring new investors into contact with emerging space companies," he remarked. "Any company proposing to use space to make a product or deliver a service is welcome to submit their business plan."

The competition gives space businesses a chance to meet with potential investors, who offer millions of dollars each year to emerging companies and new technologies. The Space Frontier Foundation will host this event, with the California Space & Technology Alliance (CSTA) as a co-sponsor.

Providing funding to new-paradigm space businesses makes perfect sense to James George, Executive Director for the Space Frontier Foundation. "After all, we're helping to build a new industry here," he stated. "The biggest challenges facing these companies are financial, not technological."

An independent panel of investment professionals will select the presenters from the business plans received prior to September 19th. During the conference, the selected companies will present their business plans twice – once to the panel for feedback on the conference's opening day, and then to a wider audience of investors to be considered for funding the following day. Any company wishing to participate can contact the Foundation by phone or review the details at http://www.space-frontier.org/Events/SFC9/.

The Frontier Enabling Test
Our definition of a "frontier enabling" technology or policy is one which has as its effect the acceleration of the creation of low cost access to the space frontier for private citizens and companies, enables or accelerates our use of space resources, and/or accelerates the rate at which wealth can be generated in space. In other words, is the project or policy going to provide a return on the national investment, if we define "return" to be the economically sustainable human habitation of space?
